About Jim…

I grew up in San Diego, then I moved to Austin, Texas, where I played jazz, blues and rock n’ roll with various bands, and attended the University of Texas. For a while I was a college music teacher. I also went to the David Liebman Jazz Master Class twice and I found it very inspirational. I’m really passionate about seeing the whole world. My travels have taken me to North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. I have seen and heard some remarkable things.

In Texas in 2002 we recorded my first CD as a leader. It is called Journeys and features drummer Gerry “the Thrasher” Gibbs; Jim Kalson on the 6-string electric bass; big Andy Langham on the Rhodes keyboard and the piano; Jon Packard on Fender 4-string electric bass; Nick Cooper on trumpet; and drummer Angelo Stokes. The music is a sort of mix of the different styles of music I was playing at the time.

I moved to Tokyo in 2003, and re-formed the Quartet. My second CD, Live in Tokyo, was recorded at the B-Flat Club in Akasaka and released in early 2006. It has Kawabata Yoshinosuke on bass, Uemura Keiichiro on drums, and Murayama Toshiya on the piano. These guys really have big personalities! On this album I’m really trying to artistically focus what I’m trying to say.

In the Fall of 2007 I moved to the San Francisco area. We play regularly in San Francisco, when I am not out of town touring, so if you have an evening off, please feel welcome to our performances!

私はサンディエゴで育ち、それからしばらくの後オースティン（テキサス）へ移り、
そこで、私はいろいろなバンドと共にジャズやブルース、ロックンロールを演奏しながら、
テキサス大学に通いました。
その後、大学の音楽の先生として過ごし、二回程Ｄ・リーブマンジャズマスタークラスへ行き
インスピレーションを得ました。
私は世界中のいろいろな国を訪れることに情熱を注いでいます。
北アメリカや南アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、アジア、中東やアフリカなどを訪れ、
そしていくつもの興味深いものをみました。

2002年にテキサスでバンドリーダーとして私の最初のCD“Journeys”を作成しました。
“ Journeys” では、ドラマーのジェリー別名“スラッシャー” Gibbs、6弦エレキベーシストのジム・カルソン、ギブス、ローズ・ピアノとピアノ奏者のビッグ・アンディー・ラングハム、4弦エレキベーシストのジョン・パッカード、トランペット奏者のニッククーパー、そしてドラマーのアンジェロ・ストークスをフューチャーしていて、その音は私が当時演奏していた様々な音楽の影響を受けています。

私は2003年に東京に移りカルテットを改めました。
そして2006年に私にとって2枚目のCD ”Live in Tokyo “を赤坂B-Flatにて
レコーディングを行い、発売しました。
このCDではベースの川畑よしのすけ、ドラムの上村計一郎、ピアノの村山としやが
一緒に演奏していてます。
彼らはほんとうに個性的です!！
このCDの中で私は心の底から芸術的な主観を集中させることに意識を向けています。
