About Jim…

I grew up in San Diego, then I moved to Austin, Texas, where I played jazz, blues and rock n’ roll with various bands, and attended the University of Texas. For a while I was a college music teacher. I also went to the David Liebman Jazz Master Class twice and I found it very inspirational. I’m really passionate about seeing the whole world. My travels have taken me to North and South America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. I have seen and heard some remarkable things.

In Texas in 2002 we recorded my first CD as a leader. It is called Journeys and features drummer Gerry “the Thrasher” Gibbs; Jim Kalson on the 6-string electric bass; big Andy Langham on the Rhodes keyboard and the piano; Jon Packard on Fender 4-string electric bass; Nick Cooper on trumpet; and drummer Angelo Stokes. The music is a sort of mix of the different styles of music I was playing at the time.

I moved to Tokyo in 2003, and re-formed the Quartet. My second CD, Live in Tokyo, was recorded at the B-Flat Club in Akasaka and released in early 2006. It has Kawabata Yoshinosuke on bass, Uemura Keiichiro on drums, and Murayama Toshiya on the piano. These guys really have big personalities! On this album I’m really trying to artistically focus what I’m trying to say.

In the Fall of 2007 I moved to the San Francisco area. We play regularly in San Francisco, when I am not out of town touring, so if you have an evening off, please feel welcome to our performances!

私 が生まれたのは、カリフォルニア州サンディエゴです。テキサス州のオースティンで学生時代を過ごしましたが、この時期にさまざまなバンドに加わり、ジャズ やブルースからロックンロールに至るまで、あらゆるジャンルの音楽を演奏しました。また、一時的に大学で音楽を教えていたこともあります。大学では音楽を 専攻していたのですが、デイヴ・リーブマンのジャズ・マスター・クラスに２回ほど参加し、強い刺激を受けました。私はアメリカにとどまらず、広く世界に熱 い関心を抱いています。これまで北米・南米、ヨーロッパ、アジア、中近東、アフリカなど、さまざまな国を訪れてきました。そして、すばらしい体験を重ねま した。

２００２年、テキサスで初のリーダー・アルバムを録音しました。『Journeys（ジャー ニーズ）』と名付けたそのアルバムでは、ドラムスにジェリー・“トラッシャー”・ギブズ、６弦ベースにジム・カルソン、キーボードとピアノにアンディ・ラ ングマンと共演しています。さらにトランペッターのニック・クーパー、ドラマーのアンジェロ・ストロークスもフィーチャーしています。このころ私が演奏し ていた多彩なジャンルの音楽が収録されています。

２００３年、私は東京で暮らすようになりました。ここで製作した２枚目のリーダー・アルバム『Live in Tokyo（ライヴ・イン・トーキョー）』は、赤坂のライヴハウス『B-Flat』で録音し、２００６年初頭にリリースされました。

２００７年、私はサンフランシスコに移りました。このCDでは、ベースの川畑よしのすけ、ドラムスの上村計一郎、ピアノの村山としやと演奏しています。実に素晴らしい連中です！このアルバムで、ようやく音楽的に自分が表現したいことをはっきり打ち出すことができたと思っています。

２００７ 年には東京での生活に終止符を打ち、カリフォルニア州サンフランシスコ郊外に落ち着きました。今はツアーで出かけていないときは、サンフランシスコを中心 に定期的に演奏しています。サンフランシスコにおいでの折にお暇がありましたら、ぜひ私のバンドを演奏を聴きにいらしてください！
